Tyre Care
A
car and its tires are like a husband and wife, lack of attention and
understanding lead to trouble, there are four important functions of a tire
1.
Supporting
weight of vehicle….{the air in the tires supports this weight}
2.
Absorbing
road shocks…{the tires absorb the shocks when you drive on rough or dirt roads.
the air in the tires acts as a spring}
3.
Transmitting
traction and braking force … {the tires enable the car to go and stop using the
friction between the tires and the road surface.
4.
Changing
and maintaining direction of travel…{turning the steering wheel turns the front
wheel enabling the car to go in the desired direction}
Did
you know that the air pressure in the tires falls naturally by approximately
10-20kPa a month? Check your tire pressure once a month when the tires are cold.
The optimum air pressure varies from car to car. It is written on the label
inside the driver’s door.
Did
you also know that excessive under-inflation leads to less fuel economy and
destruction of the environment? Always be sure to get the correct tire pressure
as under- inflation also cause the side of the tread to wear out quickly whereas over-inflation
causes the middle of the tire to wear out quickly.
Also
note that, driving in the rain with worn out tires is very dangerous. Rainwater
forms a film between the tire and the road, lifting the tire off the road and
rendering the steering wheel and brakes ineffective
Tires
should be rotated every 5,000km to prevent irregular wear and prolong tire life
where should new tyres be placed if only two (2) is being replaced?
When tires are replaced in pairs in situations like these, the new tires should always be installed on the rear axle and the partially worn tires moved to the front. New tires on the rear axle help the driver more easily maintain control on wet roads since deeper treaded tires are better at resisting hydroplaning.
